SIDE TRIP: Sexy Succulents of Laguna Beach

You may have noticed that succulents seem to be filling all the white space on counters and backdrops these days (the fiddle leaf fig’s direct competitor!). They are drought proof and tough as nails while being impressively delicate-looking and diverse as hell. Loop around any neighborhood or sidewalk in Laguna Beach and you’ll notice these colorful, hearty (green thumb not required) and sculptural plants in garden beds and starring in pots everywhere you look.

What is a succulent, you may ask? The word "succulent" comes from the Latin word sucus, meaning juice, or sap. Succulents are plants that store water in their thick, fleshy leaves, thrive in dry conditions, and can survive extended periods without water. Since most of these plants hail from desert climates, hot and sunny weather is where they do their best growing. They also make fantastic indoor plans because they look great and are super low maintenance. Now, if you want to move beyond the few indoor succulent plants you scored at IKEA, why not try jazzing up your outdoor living space with a little succulent art? For inspiration, check out Laguna Beach landscape artist Mike Pyle, who is creating literal masterpieces out of succulents.

We know we’re jumping the gun here, but who doesn’t need gift ideas? Next year for Mother’s Day, instead of the usual floral bouquet, try giving your mom a rose succulent or two. At least, that’s what Martha Stewart Living recommends. For more photos of different varieties of rose succulents and a how-to guide for caring for these unique ornamental plants, click here. And please be sure to share your mom’s reaction—we’d love to feature it in our future Mother’s Day blog.
